Jacques Ledoux

One hundred years ago, Jacques Ledoux was born. This autumn, we pay tribute to the man who shaped CINEMATEK to become both an institution that cannot be ignored at the international level and also a place of exchange where, every day, the adventure of the 7th art is carefully exhibited in the widest possible spectrum.

Our Collections

The Royal Belgian Film Archive collects and preserves a unique collection of films and has one of the richest and most diverse film collections in Europe (including countless non-fiction films and newsreels), which combined form a real visual memory of our history. Despite the focus within CINEMATEK on the Belgian film heritage, the archive has a large collection of international masterpieces from film history.

Behind the scenes

CINEMATEK regularly enriches its collections thanks to deposits and donations received from Belgian distributors and producers, as well as collections from Belgian and foreign institutions and individuals. Before they can be stored in our air-conditioned warehouses, these items go through various stages:

Belgian Film

Books, magazines and web pages were written there, also about Belgian cinema. Yet it is sometimes difficult to see the trees through the forest. One focuses strictly on topicality and promotion, the other on appreciation and criticism, still others on specific actors, authors or genres.

Our Mission

CINEMATEK is an international film archive with a focus on Belgian, regional cinema; ‘local in an international context’. As a scientific institution, we want to share our archive and know-how with partners in the research field. As an institution of public utility, we want to share our passion for cinema with a broad educational and direct audience action.

Restored

When we think of CINEMATEK's purpose, we think first and foremost of our Museum of Cinema, of screenings of great classics and unique films on the big screen, or the objects and inventions associated with filmmaking that are exhibited there. However, the often forgotten reason for our institution's existence, which is both the hidden face and the beating heart of CINEMATEK, is the preservation and restoration of films.
