RENDEZ-VOUS
Science Fiction double feature
Monster Mayhem – B-Z
In recent decades, the digital revolution and the rise of CGI have often pushed science fiction into sensory-overload blockbuster territory. That’s why it’s so refreshing to revisit those (retro)futuristic B-movies where big ideas, universal fears, and extraordinary discoveries were brought to life through handmade optical effects, miniatures, kilos of makeup, claymation, and guys in rubber suits.
With this BtoZ program, we’re serving up a nostalgic double feature of sci-fi and monsters. First, we journey into the deep reaches of space with Galaxy of Terror, a scrappy but wildly entertaining Alien rip-off. This successful formula comes with an extra dose of skin and blood, backed by an impressive B-movie cast: Sid Haig (Spider Baby), Robert Englund in a pre-Freddy Krueger role, Lynch-favorite Grace Zabriskie, and one very unfriendly, very slimy extraterrestrial.
Then, we turn to Toho Studios—the 1950s birthplace of the Godzilla franchise. Toho famously unleashed a parade of prehistoric creatures and atomic-age monsters on the public, sometimes with (and sometimes without) an alien subplot, as seen in our second feature, Destroy All Monsters. Directed by Ishirō Honda, the undisputed master of the kaijū genre, the film showcases nearly the entire Toho stable: Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, Gorosaurus, Kumonga, Varan, and Baragon!
