RENDEZ-VOUS

Be Gay, Do Crime_6
Be Divine - Our Story

In May, Our Story devotes an entire cycle to the ultimate bad queer: Divine, specifically within the context of her explosive collaboration with director John Waters.

Since its inception in the mid-20th century, independent LGBTQ+ cinema has sought to reclaim the "queer villain" figure, a fantasy of mainstream cinema, notably through the art of camp. Rather than deconstructing the queer villain, John Waters’ camp cinema inflates and distorts it to the point of absurdity. In Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble, Divine joyfully engages in kidnapping, murder, incest, and cannibalism. In Polyester and Hairspray, even through her more subdued roles as a housewife, Divine’s transgressive drag continues to challenge moral categories of good and evil, beauty and ugliness.
