Following the global phenomenon of Friedkin’s The Exorcist, John Boorman signed on to direct what he intended to be anything but a standard sequel: Exorcist II: The Heretic. This didn’t sit well with the producers who, after hacking Boorman's vision to pieces in the editing room, marketed it as a direct follow-up and threw it to the wolves of a starving fanbase. It wasn't until 2025, with the release of the documentary Boorman and the Devil, that Boorman finally got his due for his work on this truly bizarre cinematic anomaly.
