Gedragen door Kazans intense regie vertolkt Natalie Wood een jonge vrouw in Kansas in 1929, die verstikt wordt door puritanisme en sociale conventies. Ze bezwijkt onder het gewicht van haar verboden liefde, hetgeen het geweld onthult van een wereld die vrouwen het recht op verlangen en emancipatie ontzegt.
