Hilde D’haeyere (KASK/Hogent) will present her research on Dascolor, an innovative color film process dating back to 1934. She will take us on a journey through the life of its inventor and the context that led to the creation of this method. Several color techniques in cinema will be compared to Dascolor, with an emphasis on the historical and social context. Four rare short films preserved in Dascolor will be screened in digital format. In this context, Margaux Chalançon, a production staff member at Film Atlas, will present a consistently evolving website as a catalogue for all film formats that have ever existed.

The 35mm print of Ce que nos yeux ne verront plus (1935) features both variable-area and variable-density optical soundtracks, spliced together.

The Dascolor process was invented by Léon-Josse Dassonville (1887–1975), pioneer of the cinematographic industry in Belgium. Research has uncovered information on seven short subjects shot in Dascolor, of which four survive – all made between 1934 and 1936 – suggesting that the exploitation of the Dascolor process was limited to a modest amount of self-produced samples, while failing to find broader commercial success.
