Un jeune homme est en fuite en raison d'une crise indéfinie survenue dans sa ville. Après une expédition harassante à travers la jungle, il arrive dans une communauté d'anciens esclaves noirs qui tente de survivre sur une plage, connue sous le nom de La Barra, sur la côté colombienne. Alors qu'il attend là un bateau pour poursuivre son voyage, il trouve sa place dans une culture qui ne se montre pas hostile à son égard. Le réalisateur Ruiz Navia éprouve une empathie perceptible pour ses acteurs autochtones non professionnels, qu'il filme avec beaucoup de respect et de maîtrise. Il crée une atmosphère de spontanéité grâce à l'utilisation subtile d'une caméra à l'épaule et une bande son sophistiquée composée de sons ambiants. De la fusion réussie de l'art narratif et de l'ethnographie résulte un premier film très puissant.
With a similar visual style to Fernando Eimbcke's Lake Tahoe (2008), Navia's shots linger after the action/characters have moved out of frame. This technique is surprisingly affecting, with the landscape given time to exist on film in its own right. (...) The natural setting is unsettling rather than comforting. There is no disjunction between the tough lives of the impoverished people of La Barra anf the threatening, and threatened, seaside location. Not only does Ruiz Navia strain himself, he also displays the discipline of a fine as well as empathetic director. Indeed, it is diffcult to believe that this ambitious project is his first feature.
